Alarm Valve Retard Chamber

Alarm Valve Retard Chamber
Product Introduction:
forede® alarm valve retard chamber is a component used in fire sprinkler systems to prevent false alarms caused by pressure surges in the water supply. It's essentially a small tank connected to the alarm valve, designed to delay the activation of the alarm until there is a sustained flow of water, indicating a real fire.

Overview

In the event of a pressure fluctuation (e.g. a brief fluctuation in the water supply or a temperature change) but without the sprinkler actually opening, the alarm valve may falsely trigger the hydraulic alarm due to the momentary water flow. To prevent this false alarm, alarm valve retard chamber is installed.

When there is a small water flow or a temporary pressure fluctuation, water will flow into the alarm valve retard chamber.

If the water flow continues (i.e. a sprinkler is actually activated), the alarm valve retard chamber will fill up and water will continue to flow to the hydraulic alarm or electric alarm, sounding the alarm.

If it is a momentary fluctuation, the water flow will not continue, the alarm valve retard chamber will drain internally, and the alarm will not be triggered.

FAQ

Q: What is a retard chamber in an alarm valve system?

A alarm valve retard chamber is a component connected to an alarm valve in a wet-pipe fire sprinkler system. It acts as a buffer to prevent false alarms by temporarily holding pressure surges from the water supply before they reach the water motor gong or pressure switch.

Q: Why is alarm valve retard chamber necessary?

Alarm valve retard chamber prevents false alarms caused by pressure surges, water hammer, or transient pressure fluctuations in the main water supply line. By delaying the pressure rise, it ensures that only sustained flows due to sprinkler activation trigger the alarm.

Q: How does the alarm valve retard chamber work?

When water flows through the alarm valve due to sprinkler activation, it flows into the retard chamber. If the flow is sustained, water exits the chamber to activate the mechanical alarm (water motor gong) or an electric pressure switch. Short pressure surges dissipate in the chamber without triggering the alarm.

Q: Where is the alarm valve retard chamber installed?

It is installed downstream of the alarm valve and upstream of the water motor gong or pressure switch. It's typically wall-mounted or placed near the alarm valve assembly.

Q: How do I know if the alarm valve retard chamber is working correctly?

During flow testing or fire alarm tests, the chamber should delay the activation of the alarm by a few seconds. If the alarm activates instantly during minor surges or doesn't activate at all during sustained flows, the chamber may need maintenance.
