What is the difference between a sprinkler system and a deluge system?

A sprinkler system and a deluge system are both used for fire protection, but they operate in distinct ways. A sprinkler system is a network of pipes fitted with sprinkler heads that release water when the heat from a fire triggers them. This system is designed to control and extinguish fires by distributing water directly over the flame.

In contrast, a deluge system is more aggressive. It operates by opening all sprinkler heads simultaneously when triggered, releasing a large volume of water quickly to drench the protected area. This flooding effect is intended to quickly suppress the fire and prevent its spread. Deluge systems are typically used in high-risk areas where rapid fire suppression is crucial.
