What is the difference between Class A and B foam?
Class A foam and Class B foam are two types of firefighting foam, both of which are used to control and extinguish fires. While both types of foam are effective in their own way, they are suited to different types of fires.
Class A foam is specifically designed for use on Class A fires, which are fires involving ordinary combustibles such as wood, paper, and fabric. This type of foam is designed to penetrate porous materials and to cling to the surfaces of solid materials to effectively smother the fire. Class A foam is often used in wildland firefighting, where fires can involve large areas of forest and other vegetation.
Class B foam, on the other hand, is designed for use on Class B fires, which are fires involving flammable liquids and gases such as gasoline, oil, and propane. This type of foam is designed to float on top of the liquid and to suppress the vapors that are produced when the liquid is heated. This prevents the fire from reigniting and spreading. Class B foam is commonly used in industrial settings such as oil refineries, chemical plants, and fuel storage facilities.
In summary, Class A foam and Class B foam are different types of firefighting foam that are designed for use on different types of fires. Both types of foam are effective in their own way and are critical tools in firefighting operations.
