When Were Fire Sprinklers Required?
Fire sprinklers have been saving lives and property for over a century! The concept of automatic sprinklers dates back to 1872 when Philip W. Pratt received a patent for a device that would spray water on a fire when activated. However, fire codes did not require their installation until much later.
In the United States, the first building to require the installation of fire sprinklers was the Mercantile Library Building in New York City in 1892. After that, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) officially adopted requirements for the installation of automatic sprinklers in new construction in 1901.
Over the years, fire codes have become more stringent and now almost all new buildings, including those in residential areas, require sprinkler systems. In fact, in many areas, older buildings are required to be retrofitted with sprinklers. This is because fire sprinklers are extremely effective at suppressing or extinguishing fires, minimizing damage, and saving lives.
Overall, the requirement for fire sprinklers has been a positive development in building safety. Modern sprinklers are cost-effective and reliable, and the benefits of having them far outweigh the costs. By reducing the risk of fire, sprinklers help to create safer homes and buildings for everyone.
