Why Is Fire Sprinkler Water Black?
The color of fire sprinkler water is often misunderstood, but it isn't something to be alarmed about. Contrary to popular belief, fire sprinkler water is not black because it is contaminated.
The truth is, fire sprinkler water contains a chemical called antifreeze. This chemical is added to prevent the water from freezing in cold temperatures, which can lead to water damage to the building and damage to the sprinkler system.
Antifreeze is typically a bright green color, but when it is exposed to heat, it can turn black because of the carbonization process. When a fire occurs, the heat causes the antifreeze in the sprinkler system to reach its boiling point, at which point it begins to change its color.
Despite its appearance, black fire sprinkler water is still safe to use. The water is kept in a closed loop system and is never exposed to the outside air or atmosphere. Additionally, sprinkler systems are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure that the water and antifreeze solution is replaced if needed.
While the sight of black water coming from a sprinkler system can be concerning, it's important to remember that it is a sign that the system is working correctly and that the building is protected in the event of a fire.
