How Your Home Fire Sprinklers Work
A fire sprinkler is the part of a fire sprinkler system that dispenses water when the indications of an impending fire are detected, including when a certain temperature is exceeded. Fire sprinklers are widely used throughout the world, with more than 40 million fire sprinklers fitted annually. Some countries have a compulsory requirement for fire sprinklers to be installed and serviced by a government approved contractor, whereas many areas just require it for homes and some commercial buildings. Fire sprinklers can also be used to stop fires in vehicles and structures, so they are useful for this purpose as well.
Fire extinguishers are not technically fire sprinklers, but are usually used interchangeably with them. They come in different shapes and sizes and serve a number of different purposes. A common type is a water-based extinguisher, which uses water as the active ingredient, rather than electricity, to stop firing. Electric based extinguishers only use static electricity to stop a fire and are therefore more commonly used. Most home fires could probably be contained with one of these types of fire extinguishers.
A further type is the fusible or click type of fire sprinklers. These use a hard metal probe which triggers when it comes into contact with a certain substance. The moment the sensor detects a spark or any sign of fire, the trigger is squeezed, causing the water to splash and douse the blaze. Some fusible units use a bell or other loud signal to alert the public and use water automatically as soon as the sprinkler is activated. Fusible units are more expensive than automatic ones, but they do tend to last longer and are easier to use.
Another type of fire sprinklers works by using an activated carbon filter that catches the steam released from heating or cooking oils or grease. Once the steam reaches a certain temperature, it causes the carbon to activate, releasing the heat that is then released in the form of water. This type of system can be used both to just stop the fire and also to suppress the smell of cooking. Many restaurants have this system installed as an added feature, so that restaurant owners know instantly if the oil or grease has reached a dangerous level and can quickly quell the fire before it spreads.
There are also a number of fire sprinklers which use technology designed to control the flow of water. The system works by detecting where the water line is and then stops the flow, preventing the fuel from burning through to the floor. One of the most famous examples of such a system is the one at the London Eye, which has a remote-controlled button installed on the glass itself which is pressed when the door opens. It then becomes a simple matter to shut the system off and on again. Such systems are not only highly effective at controlling fires but also reduce injuries and property damage.
If you are wondering how your home fire sprinklers work, there are a few things that need to be kept in mind. For example, the water is first brought up to the roof line via gravity. From there, it flows down through piping and into the various points along the length of the piping. Finally, it's released through the main valve in the plumbing system, causing the temperature change that triggers the sprinklers to spray water and prevent the flames from growing any larger.
